Calculating my meeting’s impact

How do I calculate my meeting’s impact?

You can find out the exact carbon footprint of your meeting or event directly in the Meeting Impact Report (MIR) tool. Once you have filled in the event details there, the platform will show you a total in tons of CO2 equivalent and point you back towards this South Pole Shop to compensate for it.

==Please do not place any orders before having calculated the exact footprint of the specific meeting you want to process carbon offsets for.==

I don’t have access to the Meeting Impact Report, what can I do?

If you do not have access to the MIR tool yet, please reach out to Sustainability@marriott.com

Purchasing carbon credits

Who can purchase carbon credits

Both the hotel itself and the customers can purchase carbon credit for an event.

In either case, simply go through the MIR tool to complete the report and see the total footprint to compensate. If you wish to compensate for the customer and then send them the invoice, you can publish the report and you’ll see a section about purchasing carbon credits with a link to access this store. If you want the customer to purchase credits themselves, you can just communicate the total footprint to compensate and tell them to head to marriott.southpole.com

Climate action projects

Are all these projects approved?

Yes, all the projects you can see on this Shop have been approved by the Marriott Sustainability team who is responsible for the Meeting Impact + Carbon Offset Program.

Why is the price per tonne different for each project

The price per ton of climate projects varies based on factors like the project type, location, scale, methodology, and market dynamics. These include differences in labor, materials, regulations, and market conditions, as well as the scale and complexity of the project, verification processes, and incentives.

How many projects can I contribute to with 1 order?

Each order can only contribute to one project.

Credit retirement

What does credit retirement mean?

A carbon credit is retired once its benefit has taken place. That means it has been used and the carbon benefit it represents has been claimed by the entity that bought it. Retiring your carbon credits requires you to ensure that they are removed from the marketplace and labeled as ‘retired’ in any records or registry.

What happens to the credits I purchased after you receive payment for my order?

The credit retirement process is not simultaneous to your purchase. When you place an order, we block the credits linked to it in our system so they cannot be purchased by any other clients. That reservation is final when we receive your payment.

At frequent intervals, we take stock of all the credits purchased by properties per project and contact the Registries where the projects are registered to ask them to remove these credits from the market. This is when the retirement process begins.

When the process is complete, the Registries provide South Pole with a retirement certificate and unique serial number for the credits that were just retired. South Pole then delivers that certificate to Marriott’s sustainability team.

Where can I see if the credits I have purchased have been retired?

The information you see in your account only relates to your order(s) details and payment status. We rely on a third party to do the retirement of the credits: the Registries where the projects are registered. We therefore cannot relay retirement information in the shop directly.

We are however working on setting up a separate page to display retirement status for all orders placed on the Impact Shop.
